Kinkai Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 I'm not sure if this is the right section to put this under, please let me know and I can move it.So I had a Honda CBR 125 when I was 18, moved to Wales when I was 20 and stopped riding it (went into storage). I completely forgot about the bike and as I was going through some paperwork today found my logbook and realised I hadn't SORN'd it or changed the address of the registered keeper (for some reason 20 yo me didn't think about it), I want to straighten everything out and am more than happy to pay what's owed I just don't want to put myself in shit. It's been in storage for 2.5 years now and I believe hasn't been taxed or SORN'd since then, what can I do to avoid massive penalties or criminal charges??TL;DR - Didn't SORN bike 2.5 years ago, can't pay massive fees, help. husoi Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Start herehttps://www.gov.uk/check-vehicle-taxThen see what you will have to do next before going in full panic mode Quote
Tiggie Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 A bit of research says that as long as you weren't caught using the bike it will be an £80 fine. That's on the DVLA website Quote
husoi Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Beaten by @husoi I can be a big cat but a really fast one Quote
WD-40 Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 There's only one way out of this......You'll have to fake your own death....Then get a sex change operation....Then cut off all contact with loved ones... Then go on the run and live out your days in a cabin in Siberia Or pay the 80 quid fine Quote
fastbob Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Years ago you could actually ring DVLA and they would answer the phone so that you could have a chat and straighten things out . That was years ago . Quote
Stu Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 just go online and tax it see what happens. This then say you posted the forms if you get a fine its not your fault postman lost them Quote
Kinkai Posted June 11, 2020 Author Posted June 11, 2020 Thanks guys, I think I was panicking unnecessarily but you know how it is. I think I'm just gonna SORN it see wtf happens, if I get served papers ill update you guys Quote
husoi Posted June 11, 2020 Posted June 11, 2020 Alternative is to change the keeper's name to your missus and tax it on her name. Quote
Lumor_uk Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 Bought our first newish car, had been waiting for the DVLA to send a letter saying MOT is due after it's 3rd birthday, completely forgot about it. 5 months later realised shit we should have done it without being prompted got an MOT, no fine. Quote
JackieOWheels Posted June 17, 2020 Posted June 17, 2020 I think it would have been worst if you were caught with the bike on the road where it wasn't taxed or with valid insurance. You could always plead that you stored the bike away before MOT was due and left it in storage and forgot about it; which is what you kind of did anyway. Quote
onesea Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 You may find that they cannot fine you if you let tax lapse before the rules changed. Quote
Phill Posted June 18, 2020 Posted June 18, 2020 If you don't get caught by a anpr camera you'll be fine.I was in a similar situation, had to leave my bike untaxed and uninsured 'off the road' for 2 weeks, then the bike was sold. I haven't received any letters since. Quote
