Hi gang.
what are the options for electric motorbikes at the moment? Realistic ones.

the Zero sr/s (I think it is that), the faired one has enough range on it for my commutes.
what are the competitors?
I prefer the idea of a faired bike but doesn’t have to be. I don’t think I can buy one now but starting to think about it.

Bit of a tricky one as I don't think anyone has and electric motorbike on here so recommendations would be hard!

Also with the lack of interest from this lot I don't think any of them are bothered about them so not bothered to look

The Harley without the Harley badge looks cheaper than the zero Sr/s at about fifteen grand.

ideally I want to buy one of these second hand at about five to eight thousand (with imaginary money because I cannot quite afford that at te moment.

we're at the same stage as we were 'back in the day' when people looked at Mobile phones and said: "They'll never catch on."

The change will come when electric bikes become mainstream, when your local dealership has them on display. when you walk into any motorcycle dealership from any brand and they have them and are all fighting over who has the greatest range with the shortest possible recharge time and lightest weight. When a brand like Triumph (for example) has several on sale aimed at all the various market segments.

we're not there yet.. but its coming. Unless events take over and we have a lot more to worry about than things like this.

I use my bike 99% of the time for commuting. I love having my bike and it makes my commute better but I also think it would be good to shit on the planet a bit less.

Once bikes can have a range of 150 miles I will replace the shadow with one of them.

Unfortunately, touring on an e-bike is still out of the question.

why

He does not buy the car and does not take a car loan and insurance.

Does not buy fuel.

Does not use the services of repair shops and car washes.

Does not use paid parking.

Does not become obese.

They do not buy drugs.

They do not go to doctors as much.

They do not increase the country’s GDP

Cycling is also a disaster for the environment. Cyclists tend to live a lot longer, and therefore consume resources longer

Buy car and bikes simple

if it’s for a greener planet argument, isn’t there some kind of juxtaposition of heavily polluting mining equipment to get the materials used to make the batteries, the car building process and infrastructure development and the perceived saving of the planet?

I’m not 100% on the process, but I have a vague memory of reading something on this a while ago.

I am happy for someone to show me that ICE is better. The distances I commute are not practical on a

pushbike otherwise I would do it :-)

get up earlier could work, if you want to save the planet put some effort in 8-)

EV ownership is just moving the shitting one step away from yourself though.

Your vehicle will still use conventional tyres so you’re still shitting on the planet.

It’s an easy poke isn’t it, if you  are not totally saving the planet no f**king point.
I think it is less bad to go EV. Can someone demonstrate other than with rhetoric that it is not less bad? Thanks :-)

It's a bit of a balanced thing. EV uses electricity from the grid, and electricity production in the UK pollutes (and is about to pour millions of tons of concrete over a marshy wilderness next to Britain's prime bird sanctuary in an AONB and SSI - but's that's another thing). Some people like to ease their consciences by getting a "green tariff" or buy from a "green producer", but it's all just marketeer's window-dressing on the bare fact that everyone who uses electricity from the grid does so at an average of around 1kg of CO2 for 5kWh (this was 2020, when the covid effect made our electricity a bit greener). The only way to improve on that is to use the electricity at times when you know the grid is running more green - but I don't how you can do that practically.

So an EV still pollutes as it runs and, with the current generation mix, it pollutes a bit less its ICE equivalent. Until you take in manufacturing emissions, amortized over the lifetime of the vehicle (whatever the lifetime is for an EV) and at this point all bets are off: it's down to a matter of faith of whether you believe EV is less polluting than ICE or not, but I'm not sure anyone has any facts to offer.

Until about four or five years ago, back when UK electricity was a lot less green, the balance was clearly weighted the other way: EV polluted more, mile for mile, than ICE - forget manufacture. Since then, improvements in generation and in EV design have started to swing things in favour of EV. I reckon it won't be that long before EV is clearly the better option. And as has been said, by then the major manufacturers will be putting out ranges of EV bikes as well as cars.
