Car brakes

So my car needed new front brake pads and discs. Booked it into my local garage. That I like actually … anyway picked up the car yesterday. The owner came out. Said they needed to get my car back in and they would get an auto electric specialist out. Apparently they had changed the pads and discs. And the sensor. But the warning light was still on. Apparently they had also changed another cable as well. But light still on. So I said ok and took the car home … and I thought let’s Google this. And quickly found the light needs resetting by various button presses on the dash as well. I thought they must have tried that. But ten minutes later the light was turned off! … I rang them to cancel the auto electrician. But couldn’t bring myself to sound like a know it all. So just said the problem had resolved itself … must admit I’m surprised they hadn’t obviously come across this doing Mini brakes before … yeah I’m in a quandary. I like the local garage

I would have just told them, or they will never learn 😁

Some of the brake systems now are mental, you can actually render perfectly good system useless by following incorrect procedure.

We were told by nissan our juke needed a new head unit,  Internet said new software so I followed destructions to the letter and left car running during process and voila works fine again now.

Just tell them . I can't really see what the issue is . Are you worried that they might think that you're implying that they were trying to mislead you .

It's not uncommon for workshops to get caught out by idiosyncrasies of some modern electronics. Just let them know for future reference.

We had a Vauxhall Omega when they first came out that locked the immobilizer because the dealership supplied us with a faulty spare key.

Vauxhall couldn't get it going even after ringing the ECU manufacturers. I eventually sussed it by asking around.

So they took on a job without knowledge or expertise of that job on a Safety critical item and you want to save their embarrassment ?

Honestly it would be so easy to do a mechanical job now and end up with much fooked Ness.

Some have to be set in service mode with work completed without loss of power or said service mode or car says no.

Surely resetting a service light isn't that critical?

It may not have been a service light it could be a specific you have a problem with your brakes light, if it was just a service light re set I would be looking for another garage, getting the car back with a light would be enough to initiate that though 😂

In truth, and this is me being very honest, I think I can come over as a bit of a dick sometimes when dealing with garages … the first time was when I took my forks from my fs1e to be straightened. They weren’t any straighter when I collected them. A row ensued. In fairness, I was only 16 at the time. Dad took them back in without me and got them sorted properly … and then when I was 18 I had the windscreen replaced on my Renault 15. The new one leaked and some of the dashboard was broken. A row ensued. Again Dad, who was much more tactful than me, sorted it out. Couple of other incidents I remember from my twenties. Had the wheel bearings replaced on a Metro. And the garage tried to charge me double what they quoted. A row ensued. (I paid the original price by the way). … and there was a row when I collected my XR3i from a main Ford dealer. It had been in for accident repair. To the front panel. The insurance quote had been to replace the front panel. But they thought it was acceptable to knock it out and paint over the existing rust. I disagreed and wouldn’t take the car until it was fixed properly. Which it eventually was … I’m in my 60s now and I guess I have learnt to avoid the confrontation if it isn’t necessary. Because I’m probably not always the most tactful person.

I do agree that it might have been helpful for them to know the solution. … I do actually understand that car electrics are so complicated now it’s difficult for them to know everything about every model … I was just wondering really if I should try an independent Mini specialist. I might do

It wasn’t the service warning. It was the light that shows the brake pads are worn out. And was illuminated all of the time. … I found the solution from a Mini forum. Quite a few folks had got their cars back from an independent garage. And light still on. The solution was on the forum. It isn’t that straightforward because although these Minis all look the same there are actually multiple models. And the reset procedure varies

Now please don't be offended but have you ever been assessed for Autism ?  I was assessed about ten years ago and found to have a paradoxical mixture of traits and an overall diagnosis of mild Asperger's Syndrome . Best thing I ever did .

I have wondered about it Bob. I think we are all on the spectrum somewhere. Yeah it’s quite possible. I’m not offended in the slightest

So going off the topic of car brakes … yes I think you’re probably right. I have a complicated personality I think. But then so do we all

Alternatively if you have a garage like mine and show him this video of my cars odometer going weird he'll tell you he knows a bloke who can take the miles off if I want :shock:

I know someone who can do that too, still a market for such shenanigans, also available are systems to stop the miles being recorded in the first place, I couldn't be arsed.

That's what I told him. It added approx 400 miles on altogether. Really not worth the bother for such an old car.

Funnily enough I don't use that garage anymore unless I really have to. My Wife pointed out to me that the bills from there always came to an exact amount like £200 or £250 etc.

It was never £189.65 or similar like it is other places. I figure it gets rounded up rather than rounded down!!
