Hi all,

After completing CBT I'm looking for a bike, basically an Honda CB125. I'm seeing one on Friday and will need insurance if I buy it. Where should I look for insurance? Are there any motorbike insurance specialists, are the comparison website reliable? Thanks, Colin.

They all do bike insurance comparison

Bikesure

QuoteZone

Lexham

MSM Insurance (looks fake and ropey but for certain bike catagories came back cheapest by a country mile)

Adrian Flux

I found the normal comparison sites nothing but rubbish.

You can get a good idea of cost with the comparison sites. I have halved my Insurance this year by using the fury creature site, all the others usually involve sales calls.

You could also try Devitt, they are a broker and could find the cheapest / best option for you.

The bike insurer is a broker, have had some good results from them but really you’ll have to try quite a few till you get an idea as to where you are with them. Spoiler alert- it wont be cheap so don’t be surprised but bite the bullet and be careful.

One factor that will influence the premium is how much you're willing to have as excess.

Isn't a linear calculation,so it's a good idea to play with the comparison sites changing it to make sure you get the best deal.

MCN uses one of the other comparison sites, can't remember which exact one.

Having a locked up garage helps a lot also.

Devitt were good for me this year, you just have to keep searching, good luck!

Do bear in mind that these will be entirely computer generated and so there are two factors to consider. Firstly that all the details you enter are absolutely correct. There is no room for error. Once you pay, you will very likely be asked to pay more if you discover a mistake that cannot be ignored. So check them carefully.

The other factor is that these computer generated results will be designed to maximise the profit to the company you choose. It’s often a good idea to phone them direct as they are more likely to knock a bit off in a bid to grab your business as a new customer. Especially as they will not be paying the comparison site - who get a cut on every policy that is sold via them.

its really in your interest to use comparison sites as a guide then call the broker direct and don’t use the number provided by the comparison site. Use google to find the actual phone number.

I found Lexham to have the lowest quote for third party, fire & theft (3PFT) but still over a grand for a bike kept on private property and a rider in his 40s with a clean licence. Most of the quotes were at least double that. 3rd party only started at £650.

Is this something that will keep up or will the price go down after I've passed, or had my licence for a year or two? Would it be less for a bigger bike that is less of a target for thieves?

They do ask what if any security device is fitted; which ones are most effective and would bring costs down?

Price will go down after passing, experience, and Ncb if you dont claim.

Anything is fair game to the

scum of the universe brigade - just that its generally few things that drive them to really act.
1, how easy/ risk to nick?

2, how much is it worth in relation to the effort?

3, how desperate are they?

really what you need to balance is a bike you really need? Does anyone really need an r1? Or would a middle to small bike do the same job? £15k minter or a 3kused example?

Best way to find out is to run different quotes with different answers to the security question. When I did this I found most made no difference at all, while the beat in class knocked about 5% off. Never thought it was worth the discount, so I don't remember which they were.

Be aware that if you declare a particular chain and lock, say, you have to use it all the time. Some insurers will say you're not covered if you don't, others just bump the excess.

Thanks for all your advice. Like @bonioI found diddly squat difference between quotes on the comparison sites by running different quotes for disc lock/heavy duty chain and padlock/no devices. That included some of the insurers mentioned on this thread. I've still to call them directly though, as @Gerontious suggested. But for my own piece of mind I have ordered an Oxford disc lock with alarm and an HD chain with padlock - trusting, aren't I!

If you want a way to deter thieves, then two locks are the to go. If it me, I'd opt for an alarmed disc lock plus a heavy duty padlock and chain too.

Got my insurance sorted today. The final step was phoning the brokers direct. £20 cheaper and £50 less excess compared to the comparison sites. Thank you, all your advice worked.

Bit late now, but using what I had read on here, I took a 500 quid excess on a 2k bike, garaged but with no extra locks on it other than the steering lock.

Third party fire and theft. I looked at third party only but that was more expensive.

£104!

I think it helps that the local scrotes wouldn't know what to do with a Honda 600, they are mostly interested in small bikes they can ride round the streets/woods on.

As I happens I do have an alarm disc lock, ground anchor and heavy chain and a camera that alerts my phone to any movement in the garage.
