Bigtee Posted May 11 Posted May 11 Hi guy's going to austria in august, advice on biker clothing . textile, leather, mesh what weather could i expect. Quote
S-Westerly Posted May 11 Posted May 11 Only advice can give is do not break the speed limits. Absolutely red hot about enforcing them and on the spot fines certainly used to be the order of the day. 1 Quote
bonio Posted May 12 Posted May 12 Never been, but I think you have to be prepared for anything - cool and rainy, or dry and hot - especially in the mountains. For me, that would mean textiles + layers plus a mesh jacket at least. Quote

But these can only give an approximation. So for example August 20th last year at 2pm it was 12.5c at the eidelweiss on the Grossglockner which is 2,500m up. Cooler than I would expect - but it was cloudy with a bit of a breeze. i would never expect it to be cold in August. Cool by comparison - but never cold. Travel expecting summer heat and be ready to deal with summer rain storms. Which are always a risk… it’s still Northern Europe after all. 1 1 Quote
manxie49 Posted May 12 Posted May 12 IMHO Textiles, it shouldn't be too cold, so if you have removable liners then that's a bonus ........ Bear in mind what @S-Westerly said about speed limits. Austrian and Swiss Police are cut from the same mold. Zero tolerance to speeding, no leeway and no warnings given, they will fine you, the cost is on a sliding scale and goes up depending how fast you're going above the posted speed limit. Quote
husoi Posted May 12 Posted May 12 You will be in the Alpes, of course you will be cold Remember to buy the environmental sticker before (or just after entering) entering Austria. Usually for sale on services on motorway or you can just ask. Expect rain, wind, sunny, cold, warmth and fabulous weather all in same day A bit like Scotland but without the adorable midges I crossed Austria to Slovenia and never found anyone controlling the speed. Mind you, I was with a trailer and you can't speed on the Alpes with it. 1 Quote
Bigtee Posted May 12 Author Posted May 12 Thanks you all for the info . I have now a better understanding of what to expect. 1 Quote
Steve_M Posted May 12 Posted May 12 Our two trips taking in Austria have been in September. We both wore textiles and carried spare layers (as we also enjoy walking the fells of Cumbria , these layers tend to be the same as we wear for walking). Each time we have got sodden on the Gerlos, requiring donning waterproofs, and the Grossglockner was closed due to snow on one occasion. Quote
OldEssexMan Posted May 13 Posted May 13 Dash-cams are not permitted in Austria. On-the-spot fines I believe. 1 Quote

RAYK47 Posted May 16 Posted May 16 Just got back from the Alps at the weekend and it included going through Austria (albeit only for one day). Layers are key, including a waterproof layer. that way you are prepared for anything. Austrian police have a reputation and a "no nonsense "attitude. We didn't encounter any on our trip but we were warned by some locals to not piss them off if we get stopped and that they are even locally considered to be "ar*eholes" (their words not ours). don't forget your vignette if you are intending to use the motorways i had a GoPro attached to my helmet while i was there but i dont recall using it in Austria though.
