1. How fast was the Nikken?? Did it sound well? So today it stopped raining (or at least threatening to rain) for long enough to get back to the K100. Cause of horn failure diagnosed: https://i.imgur.com/YbsZNy1.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> I'll get round to that. Clocks unbolted, forks unclamped, top yoke pulled off: https://i.imgur.com/cHkB7r4.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> K100's top yokes have the handlebar clamps rubber mounted so that the front wheel can do what it feels like over white lines. BMW like this effect so much I see even the F800 has it. Ridiculous. https://i.imgur.com/h2o7qGb.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> The cat was enthralled as always.. https://i.imgur.com/hKZdv6p.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Step 2: Take the front off. https://i.imgur.com/Ifrw0sP.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> An extra part of taking the front off was to replace the brake pads. I remember someone somewhere asked when they should replace pads, and one response was "when they're flat". I think that's some good advice https://i.imgur.com/jBP1pNx.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> https://i.imgur.com/zmAzeS6.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> They were alright (had some left) ~2500 miles ago, I don't know what happened! With the front off and the top yoke out of the way I removed the knurled adjuster expecting a taper roller to be part of it.. Err.. https://i.imgur.com/QFQr4IP.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> https://i.imgur.com/9i9xrUW.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> I guess K100s are built slightly differently to K75s after all. I couldn't figure out how to get the lower yoke out as it wouldn't budge with me pulling at it but the good old Clymer manual said just mallet it out. It worked. https://i.imgur.com/a7L1pno.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> This left the joyous races to try and bash out. Also notice how it is further into the headstock than simply flush, so I'll have to find a way to bash the new ones in further. Great. https://i.imgur.com/8pIjJJj.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Special tools for this most delicate of operations.. https://i.imgur.com/OLuktVc.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> https://i.imgur.com/MXRlhjy.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> It wasn't bad actually, not quite as tight/hidden as most Japanese machines. For new bearings I've chosen to Koyo JRRS tapers which come with a neat rubber seal on them. Sadly this seal did not fit inside the lightly mangled protective cups so I left those out, this may be a bad thing in retrospect because the holes that I used to bash the old bearings out will probably let water reach my new bearings.. But for non-holes Japanese stuff I think they might be the future! I just didn't understand how BMW had designed this particular machine. https://i.imgur.com/7JVq82b.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Put the bits that need to be small in the freezer, but the bits that need to be warm in the sun. Anything that doesn't play ball gets the feel the wrath of Mr Hammer. https://i.imgur.com/wIEImTj.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> https://i.imgur.com/zeZlCr1.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> The taper bearing that goes on the stem didn't want to play so I had to bash it down with the help of an old/discarded TRX850 fork spring spacer. This is why you never throw anything away! Also I use an old sprocket to hammer the races into the headstock, works okay. To bash the lower race inwards I took one of the old races to the bench grinder and took a bit off so it wouldn't get stuck in the headstock and then bashed that while on top of the new races. Perfick. Crammed as much grease as I could into the new rollers.. https://i.imgur.com/kD2Re5R.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Slap 'em on to the front like so.. https://i.imgur.com/ZZzXb2Z.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Lovely solidly mounted handlebars, aaahhhhhh! https://i.imgur.com/1eqUpUb.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> And begin reassembly! https://i.imgur.com/GqOBAyM.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Cor I'm knackered.
2. They look quite good in red don't they
3. It does, bu let us know how you're getting on with it after 3000 miles or so - as I say, mine started to fall to bits.
4. Briefly useful in ignition switches and around spark plugs/HT leads, but fixes nothing because it disappears. In industry it's really good on cutting discs that would otherwise get covered in stickiness, but we definitely wouldn't use it because it's not food grade. Definitely wouldn't use it all.
5. Perhaps it was her evil twin, I once saw a similar thing in the documentary "Knight Rider".
6. Does the exhaust smell of fuel? I struggle to believe you've lost compression on all four cylinders, I'd be looking to the ignition especially if you've been chopping the wires about.
7. For a while now I've been unhappy with the way the old K100 yokes, meant for 41.3mm Brembo items, have struggled to clamp the late K75 Showa forks that I've fitted which are 41mm. The steering head bearings have also had a notch in them ever since I bought the bike 6 years ago and the brake pads are about down to the metal so.. https://i.imgur.com/D1lQ5Nw.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> BMW do the upper bearing like this. How am I supposed to lever it off there!? https://i.imgur.com/oMPfhzS.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Ohhhh. Hammer it through the holes. Nice. https://i.imgur.com/4e26DQj.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> And the lower yoke too! Even nicerer. Anyone who has had to get the cup off the bottom of a Japanese stem, let alone a taper roller, will know just how much of a great idea this is. Thank you BMW for helping us service things that likely won't need attention until well past the warranty is over. https://i.imgur.com/Ruw3mHN.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> So, you put on some since it's an 80s machine and get your hammer.. https://i.imgur.com/CH37f9e.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> And with a few good whacks off it pops. Genius! https://i.imgur.com/5sKcrVb.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Not so genius is the way that the bottom cap protector thingy gets a bit mangled in the process but I'm sure it'll hammer flat when the bearings are put on. The lower yoke is every bit as easy too.. https://i.imgur.com/TQMIZFi.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Naturally the cat was fascinated by watching an expert at work. https://i.imgur.com/SfEvar8.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> Next step is to remove the old yokes from the bike. The sticking point here is that the clocks are bolted to the upper yoke and I couldn't figure out quite how. Since I have all the time in the world right now thanks to being furloughed I decided to go the long way round and take the fairing off so I can see what I'm contending with, and maybe fix the horn that hasn't worked since I last took the fairing off and broke the wire 6 years ago. First get the radiator cover and then the lower fairing bits off, it never fails to astound me how much better it looks like this. I must admit I'm considering filling the screw holes in and running it like this, the lower fairing pieces are in a right state too.. https://i.imgur.com/ZuJBxuA.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> More work.. https://i.imgur.com/8GTAELQ.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> https://i.imgur.com/E9IPKZX.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> So that's it, ha. https://i.imgur.com/fQ1htU0.jpg' alt='IMGUR>'> More tomorrow if it's not raining
8. Indeed, I don't wear a full-on suit but it is a shirt and trousers, I just wear it under my bike gear like normal clothes. This has worked for interviews too, just remember to take the smart shoes with you!
9. Presumably these are directional microphones, perhaps the different "nodes" are focused on a part of each lane of the road? If it also records the noise so it can be verified as an obnoxious exhaust then I can see how they could hand out fines with it. What I don't understand is why it's not for cars, they are the loudest vehicles that go past here?? My hearing has been assaulted by many more disgusting hatchbacks than bikes.
10. Or replaced it with the wrong one, or put it on the wrong way round..
11. I put some Denso ones in my CB250, it was noticeably more perky for about 50 miles and then went back to being the same as it was with copper NGKs. Then after about 7000 miles they started arcing down the porcelain so that was that. The NGKs lasted 25K.. Wouldn't bother again!
12. Only the half that is south of the A46 is 50MPH, the northern half (also the better half) is still NSL. This factual inaccuracy has tainted my enjoyment of this review
13. Does the owner's manual have running in specifications? And does the bike come with a warranty to worry about keeping?
14. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KLrq2sEOHPk I've never been keen on Dickinson era Maiden with faux-operatics and an annoyingly high pitched guitars but the earlier Di'Anno stuff is quite good. A lot more honest, and that may be why it has aged better..
15. Ah I should've specified that I believe it is EU law. Not sure where you stand as an EU citizen buying tickets from within the EU mind!
16. I believe they're supposed to give you a cash refund if they cancelled the flight, but many airlines are not doing so. Actually managing to directly contact them to ask for a cash refund is now the hard part!
17. If it stinks of fuel then that's good, at least the float needle isn't stuck in its hole. Have you tried varying amounts of choke and throttle? You're not just pulling the choke on full and leaving the throttle closed and holding the starter button, right? Once you've semi-flooded it (like you have done if the exhaust stinks of fuel) you will likely have much better luck at half choke and a bit of throttle, just keep trying different levels of both until it shows signs of life. I often find it really helps to leave it for a bit (10 mins perhaps) and then have another go, maybe it lets the fuel evaporate off the plug a bit or something. Some kind, nurturing words seem to help too
18. My mum had a flight booked with Ryanair that was supposed to happen at the start of this month but of course it was cancelled, they initially offered a cash refund which she applied for but then they switched to offering vouchers instead. I've held off badgering Ryanair for a cash refund so far (I have to do it because she has no idea what an Internet is..) and was hoping that an adult would wade in and force them to offer cash refunds as a matter of course but it doesn't seem to be happening. You still have to contact them through online chat or by phone and best of luck with either one! Sadly it was paid on a debit card too so no extra protection on that front either. It's all surprisingly difficult.
19. Do the wheels spin freely? Is the chain nice and free, not gone rusty and stiff? It doesn't take a lot to bring down the top speed of a 125!
20. Maybe one of the adjusters is slightly warped? My first thought was that maybe the axle wasn't straight any more but it must be or you'd never get it through the wheel, hmmm!
21. Been practising your rolling burnouts XTreme ?
22. The front end and rear wheel look like they're from a Lexmoto Arizona (I recognise the CB250 wheels!) but I can't quite figure out what the frame and swingarm came from. It's not the Arizona because that front downpipe of the frame would've been split into two loops while this uses the engine as a stressed member like the CB250. Anything with a pod filter should be avoided, and anything with the battery hidden (or removed??) is only fit for scrap. Plus it'd be an absolute nightmare to insure, are there any modifications we should know about sir..?
