onesea Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Ok I have always been sold on Mitchlen Pilot Road Series of tyres.I have tried others but always fall back to PR's. Has the world moved on or do I just stick with the PR range?Looking for cost effective all year, high mileage tyres, that are good in the wet and dry.Bike is a heavy Triumph Trophy 1200 240kg, often 2 up. Stu Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 If you like what you have used in the past then feel free to stick with them The PR range are cracking tyres Quote
husoi Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I've used the Battlax and the BT45 for a long time, recently moved into the Michelin pilot 4.Michelin are cracking tyres but I would rate them more than the Bridgstone. But My bike is a 300kg pan european For the shadow I'm planning on getting the new BT46 Quote

onesea Posted September 17, 2020 Author Posted September 17, 2020 If you like what you have used in the past then feel free to stick with them The PR range are cracking tyres That's the advice I have always followed, until my last rear. Presently the rear is a Metzeler Roadtec Z8 - no complaints yet. I bought it because it was literally 1/2 the price of PR4 at the time, I have no complaints although i cannot say how many miles is done.Presently I can get a Metzger Z6 for 2/3 the price of a PR4/5 and I cannot say I am not tempted. Although the difference is not that great in price. Then buying a new tyre for one or other bike ever 6 months or so it's a noticeable cost. Yes I have no issues with having miss matched front and rear tyres. If I bought tyres in pairs it would push costs up massively, when they wear out I replace.During my time in bikes I have used:Road Smarts I found they lacked in the wet,Battle Axe did not have the life I expected,PR4's I seem to get punctures at around 6k miles. Hence I bought insurance with my last front. Quote
fullscreenaging Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 (edited) Avon Storm 3D XM (extra miles) designed for heavier bikesFitted these to my Versys 1K last year and a very impressed with them. They warm up quickly and give very good feedback, especially the front tyre. I’ve done about 2000 miles and the rear doesn’t have any noticeable wear or squaring off. Only been caught in the wet a couple times and they perform very well. I’ve used michies in the past and the Avon’s are better imo Edited September 17, 2020 by fullscreenaging Quote
MikeHorton Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 I'll 2nd the Avon's I've had Avon spirits fitted to my tracer 900gt and they are amazing in all weathers the standard fit Dunlop 222"s were less than good. I went with these on advice of the dealers who rated them and assured me I'd get greater wear out of them.I guess it depends on the type of bike as to what works, I had Metzler tourance fitted to my Himalayan and again they seemed the perfect fit.If you find a good tyre for your bike stick with it Quote
onesea Posted September 17, 2020 Author Posted September 17, 2020 Avon Storm 3D XM (extra miles) designed for heavier bikes Interesting at 240kg often 2 up I fall in the heavier bike category and 20% cheaper than PR4/5's with good reviews. Quote
onesea Posted September 18, 2020 Author Posted September 18, 2020 I have gone with the Avon Storm 3D XM I found the pair for £150 compared with about £110 for the front. Quote
Marino Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 I have angel gt and I am happy with it, I had pr3 on different bike before and it was good tyre.My opinion is that angel is better on dry, and I am sure that pr3 was much better on wet.Longevity, probably the same Quote
geofferz Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 I got 3k miles from my rear pr4 - no more than a sports tyre. But I ride like a nutter. Either way, it's a no from me, I'm losing traction for no longevity...but I'm an outlier. Quote

onesea Posted September 18, 2020 Author Posted September 18, 2020 I got 3k miles from my rear pr4Bloody hell that would be 3-4 sets of tyres a year for me. I get about 10-12k from a tyre I am for from known for the slowest riding.Although now I need my driving licence for work I have rained in allot. Quote

S-Westerly Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 Given the price of a decent tyre I'll give it a miss. Quote
geofferz Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Given the price of a decent tyre I'll give it a miss. Usually done at the end of a tyre's life. Or beginning of a drag race. Quote
