Doing damn well there.. hope breakfast included… west coast and anywhere north of Balloch/Loch Lomond take the piss quite frankly.. Although the wife and I have found some good deals through a couple of popular websites. We tend not to go big holidays, prefer 2/3 long weekends or midweek breaks a year.. if you do YouTube teapot1 has a good series of vids on the NC500 when he done it with a few others through his tour company. Some include breakfast some are pay on the day Yeah we did well to get them all at that price Quote

Steve_M Posted November 18, 2024 Posted November 18, 2024 Next year’s plans? Finish our 2024 tour. Probably need to duplicate some of this year’s tour as my good lady wants to visit one of her uni friends who lives at the western end of the Pyrenees (missed her this year as she was at the Cannes boat show). Finish renovating the lounge: start on the dining room. Become qualified to run British Judo Association “Find your feet” courses. Quote

I'm a 1st Kyu, although not been on the mat in over a decade, but also have a PGdip in Clinical Exercise Science and a large part of that was recovery after falls, strokes, heart attack etc. I only really have a Monday evening free where I can say I'm available from 6pm onwards but am really interested in this. Motorbike wise, adding to my original post, would like to get to Scottish Motorbike Show next year, although it's in March (probably) usually around the same weekend as my Wedding Anniversary. Build more permanent structure for bike and some kit, sprays, oils, brushes, buckets etc.. New helmet and continue to build kit collection. Quote

As a 1st kyu you could get your Level 1 coaching award without too much difficulty (Level 2 requires much commitment). This might be of interest to you. You don't need to buy a bigger bike yet if you don't want to - do your formal training on the school's bikes. You'll find that the 'beginner' big bikes are more stable at both slow and high speed riding. You'll be intimidated at the starts of day one but after an hour you'll love it. Not now of course - but when the time comes ... Second that… licences opens options at a one off cost but doesn’t mean you definitely have to dip into it in a hurry if at all. 2 Quote

With the experience you're gaining now, your test shouldn't be a huge issue. Many people (myself included) find larger bikes easier to ride. If you take your test on a small bike then, if you ever want to progress later, you'll simply need to repeat an identical set of tests all over again - not to mention another set of costs. I absolutely agree with this. When I took my test on my 125 and then bought a 500 I was amazed how much easier everything is. No low speed wobbles. Filtering much easier. A science teacher friend explained it is the gyroscopic effect of having greater mass. I wouldn’t discount taking the big bike test at all. 3 Quote
Pie man Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 Planning a trip to Euroland. First, I will have an early camping weekend in Scootlund, then decide if the Euroland jaunt will be camping or hotels, although for the last 19 years camping has lost apparently I snore like a freight train. 2 Quote
Throttled Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 I plan to ride the last parts of the Scottish main land coast not yet ridden, with the Kintyre Peninsula and the Tayside section from Dundee to Aberdeen. The maybe head south to parts not yet visited, such as East Anglia and D&C. 1 Quote
Capt Sisko Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 (edited) Unashamed plug for the Royal British Legion Riders annual 1,000 miles in 24hrs ride (or 500 in 15hrs) on the weekend of the 6th to 8th June 2025. For those of you not familiar with the above it's an charity ride run by the UK branch of the Iron Butt Association to raise money for the Royal British Legion. The general idea is to ride one of the six preset routes (all starting & finishing at Squires Cafe, nr Leeds), the longer ones being each just over 1,000miles and do them in under 24hrs. You don't need a big tourer or an adventure bike and you don't need to speed, but it's not for learners as you do have to use motorways. If you can ride comfortably & consistanlty at motorways speeds you'll do it easily. I did a write up of my '24 ride here and I'm happy to answer any questions as best I can. Link here, FB page here. Pie man Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 @Capt Sisko Do you know what percentage take the North and south routes. I would imagine the North route is poplar however the south looks as if it will be harder. Quote

The north route has less chance of congestion and the scenery is better, but the weather can be worse and that M74/6/62 is a bit of a drag late in the day. I've done North Clockwise once and North Anti Clockwise twice. I prefer AC but others swear by CW. Nobody is right. Edited November 26, 2024 by Capt Sisko Quote
Pie man Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 I think I would also choose the North AC route, thinking the long return stretch would be all motorway from Glasgow, still not an easy ride though. Fair play to all those that take part. Quote

One of the reasons I prefer AC is than on the said long stretches of motorway there are regular services with proper loos, seats and a choice, albeit limited choice but still a choice of hot food. On the A1 south, and the checkpoint at Shell in Berwick is as good example as any, it's just a garage with the usual small selection of snacks and a brick wall to sit on to eat them. Not exactly a refreshing break when it's the likely to be eleven o'clock at night when you get there and by then you'll need it. 1 Quote

I know the roads and the last legs coming south have proper services. HOWEVER I'm sure you know but the M6 at the moment is badly affected by long term roadworks with up to 2 hours delay according to overheads. That's probably a good reason for also doing that leg late in the day unless there's night closures of course. Quote
