I found out that it ONLY cost £15.50 for mod 1 and £75 for mod 2, this totals to £90 as a pose to the £600 - £700 standard price tag.

The catch is, you need to have your own bike and be insured on it. If you fail the test even 5 times you still come out better off!!

I just want to know is there anyone who:

A) can advise me on a good bike to use for the test which is cheap?

B) lives in london and may want to share the cost of a bike to do the exam?

I think the point of the £600-700 tests is not the cost of the test.....but the training and use of a bike in order to take the test. Even if you bought your own bike you'd have problems insuring it before getting your license....and you'd also need to get it to the test centre ( and possibly from, if you fail).

In theory you are right.....but I think in practice there are good reasons to pay the fees for the training and use of a school bike.....

Don't forget your theory and CBT which is often included in the £600. Well the CBT is.

The training centres are charging you for bike hire and instruction not just adding several hundred quid to the test to make money! I don't know how you'd get insured on the bike whilst doing your test and however good a rider you are I don't think you'll pass without being taught what the instructor is looking for and how to ride to that standard. Also you'd need someone with a licence to ride the bike to and from the centre.

600 quid in the grand scheme of things is a drop in the oceans. Biking is a great way to blow cash!!

Also once you pass you'll not want a 125bike.

You will need some kind of pro training for the tests as you will find it tricky to get on a big bike and just pass.......

The course is there for a reason and should be completed to give you the best start in biking.

If the costs are an issue then break it down, do your cbt, then theory then mod1 training and test then same with mod 2.

Doing it your way is hassle and rushed imo.

£600 to use a schools bike fully insured and their instructors expert knowledge for 3 days isn’t bad at all.

Your route may not work out that much cheaper, £90 test fees. I bet the insurance is extortionate for that and then if you haven’t got your own method of getting the bike or the tea centre you’ve then got to pay for that. Plus without proper practice you’re much more likely to fail the Mod 1 a few times.

If you all of a sudden realise the U-Turn isn’t the doddle you think it is and you drop your bike you can add on to the cost for repairs too.

Out of interest how much experiance have you got on a motorbike?

Interested to see the cost of insurance. Short term insurance if you want to test ride a bike or drive a car with full licence is very expensive. Years ago I paid £60 so I could test drive a car from a private seller, that's one day third party. The cost to insure someone with no licence or training must be much higher than that I would think.

Which means you had access to a bike and private land to ride it on, so you are either very lucky or you paid out £500, £600, £700 or more to get the level of experience you describe.

If on the other hand, like the vast majority of people, prior to taking up motorcycling, you have no experience and no free bikes and land to ride them on, the lessons option is the only one and to call such people naive is wrong.

We haven't been swindled into paying for training. Most training schools are very upfront with the cost of the tests. You are paying to hire a bike from them, for training and for an escort to the test centre. You can't ride a 600cc bike without an instructor on public roads I believe so where are you going to practice? If you are really experienced, most schools should give you a 2/3 day option for around £400. How much will it cost you to insure the bike for one / two days?

Not about playing it safe. We all know what it's like to ride a bike and how invaluable knowledge and advice is.

Plus we have to share the road with people that wing it through tests and realise they are out of their depth when they get in the real world.

You can learn a lot on YouTube yes but riding a motorbike isn't one of them

it would appear there is one provider that offers some assistance in this respect ..
