I've been meaning to get a set for a while and my Wife is looking for ideas what to get me so thought I'd float this past her.

Anyone here got a set that they'd recommend? And not for snap-on prices

Saw these going for £14 which didn't look bad, just don't want to use them and find they round off at the first signs of a tough fastener :classic_huh:

There's a thought @Stu :thumb:

I've got a few bits of Halfords advanced stuff and it's all been good so far. Except for their hex head sockets. I've cracked two of those so far!! Both of the same size and both done taking off the retaining screw on a cars brake disc :classic_mellow:

Got replaced though so not a huge issue

Draper Expert tools are good, I have a 1/4" socket set, only had one breakage 10mm socket in many years of use.

Halfords are also good, I have has a 1/2" socket set for 30 years even the ratchet still working well, I wore out the 17mm (car wheel nuts) but all the rest are good.

Before you go shelling out on a complete set , ask yourself which ones are you actually going to use ? Personally I seem to mostly use just one ( On metric bikes ) and it's my 5mm . I've had this thing for 30 years and we've shared many adventures . I've no idea what make it is but it's never let me down .

I have 2 in my toolbox, no idea what size they are but they take some stick, they twist a fair bit but never snapped yet, definitely handy things to have.

I made a very large one a while back.

4 5 and a 6mm are the most common on my bike

Until today I never looked to see what size mine were . All I know is that the one I've thought of as a 6mm for years is actually a 5mm . 😉

@onesea I have a set of those, very useful. Though thats what I have cracked two of doing brake discs :classic_sad:

I envy all of you who have had sets for the last 20 years as they will most likely be better quality metal than whats sold today!

Wife says she has spent all she's planned on me now so I ordered myself the draper ones last night  (£13 from toolstation)

If you.ve broken a hex bit then I can't see that a T handle Allen key will do the job!

@KiwiBob I wont be using them on anything that tough! The hex bits both snapped while doing brake discs :classic_blush:

I've fancied a set of t-handles for a while now as they look like they'll make quick work of fasteners

The Draper ones look pretty good, I bought these of e-bay, £11, wasn't really expecting much but I've had them over a year, a couple of them have had regular use and they're still going strong.

This is one of the benefit of not buying presents for each other at Xmas, if I want them I just get them.

I'm banned from buying myself things in the lead up to Christmas after the great electric razor disaster of 2012. Though the one she bought me was loads better than what I got myself :-D

Your not selling it.

And then go get something good quality, like Wera, so it can last 30 years. My Wera allen keys are 15 years old so far. I'll lose faster than break it...
