LauraS Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Hi there! I'm hoping someone knowledgeable in this community will be able to help me with a question relating to motorcycle insurance. I'm searching on behalf of my employer who has had a European motorcycle licence since 1982 but only recently (last month!) passed his UK motorcycle test. He has contacted Bennett's and Carole Nash but has been told he can't get insurance for the bike he's bought because the system is only looking at the UK licence date. Are there any insurers you could recommend who would take the EU licence length (nearly 40 years!) into consideration for a quote? Thanks very much, Laura. Quote
Bender Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 I doubt you will get any where with the license, they will only be interested in no claims built up, which there is probably non. Could try adrian flux, it may be a case of very expensive insurance or just sell the bike, buy something sensible for a year then see what insurance is like. 1 Quote
bonio Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 What's the bike? A lot could depend on the size of the engine. Most tests in the UK are on bikes around 650cc, and this is what insurers expect people with new licences to ride. I've also noticed that insurers are very wary about bikes over 1000cc. I'd been riding for a few years when I bought a 1200cc and insurance was hard to find (despite clean licence and 5 years NCB), and when I did get it, it was pricey. The next year I had no problems at all, because I'd already done a year on a bigger bike. My advice would be to use the comparison sites to get some quotes for different engine sizes, and see what comes up. Also try some older bikes too. That way they'll find out what's possible to insure. Then get some quotes for the current bike, but saying the licence is a year old, and see if they can get insurance for that. If all's well, they could perhaps buy a bike to ride for year and bide their time, and then sell it on once they can get insurance on their own bike. 1 Quote
bonio Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 (edited) Oh and get a quote from MCE for the current bike and licence. I can't recommend them as insurers, but they seem to be less fussy about who they take on than the others. Edited July 29, 2021 by bonio 1 Quote
husoi Posted July 29, 2021 Posted July 29, 2021 Keep in mind that since Brexit EU licenses are no longer valid in UK as exchange the same way it was before. So I would think that there are legal implications in getting an insurance with an alien license. I don't understand why he had to take a new test as it would have been possible to exchange his license from any EU country into a UK full license. 1 Quote
Fish Posted July 30, 2021 Posted July 30, 2021 The insurance game is a massive ripoff! I have a years no claims but under my CBT license, now I have my full license that year of no claims makes ZERO difference! It's one big scam! Quote
S-Westerly Posted August 1, 2021 Posted August 1, 2021 Surely is. Its a legal requirement so it seems to be a license to print money. Quote

Does the NCB you built up not carry over once you get your full licence? Quote

bonio Posted August 1, 2021 Posted August 1, 2021 Yup. My NCB goes back further than my licence. Quote
Fish Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 Sadly most of the insurance companies I'm getting quotes from don't see it this way. 1 Quote
Mississippi Bullfrog Posted August 2, 2021 Posted August 2, 2021 It's not usual for the premium to increase after someone has passed their test which may in effect negate any NCB. Check the numbers, is the NCB deleted or has the premium gone up? Quote

I didn't bother entering any details on their website I spoke to a human. I wanted a multi-bike policy, fully comp including commuting on both bikes along with full no claims and Uk/European break down assistance for both bikes, carry pillion etc. They beat everyone else I tried that day by £100 Quote
