I am trying to visit my mother. I had to use the car to bring my dad who can't walk very far but all the disabled parking spaces were full, so we ended up on the top floor of the multi storey car park.

We get to the stairwell and the fire alarm goes off. The lifts therefore stop working which makes sense. But then all the doors lock with magnetic locks. Which is great unless you happen to be in a stairway at the time!

Fortunately it's clearly a false alarm, but if there was a fire we have no way out of the stairwell. Bonkers!

Surely in the case of a fire alarm the magnetic door lock thingys should automatically open? Maybe they were wired in backwards.

With regards hospital's I think it's all a lottery and luck of the draw as to what the situation is on any given day.

Having spent many an hour in hospital accidents and emergency I find the most annoying thing to be the folk who clearly don't need to he there, and they've always been there even before doctors decided they only talk to you on the phone.

I would agree however some places are inherently worse than other but all are feeling the strain.

As for the folk, 20 years ago the fire brigade went round putting up free fire alarms (they still do). They where so good they nearly put themselves out of business.

The NHS said if you are I’ll come to us, we help will help. People have forgot how to look after themselves and the press sensationisum doesn’t help.

You'd have thought so, but there is a sign that says when the alarm goes off the doors will automatically lock closed.

Bizarre logic.

Not really. I can only assume the door close and from the stairwell you cannot access any level until ground floor. Therefore, you do not walk out on the level that has the fire, any stairwell would give you 1hr protection to egress the building.  you should always be able to access the stairwell tho, if not there is a cause for concern and the FRA needs a review, did the doors lock and stop you entering the stairs:scratch:

That's the point. If the fire alarm goes off there's no way out. I spoke to the security guy about it and he said he didn't understand it either. He was just trying to resolve it because so many people were stuck. To exit the stairway at ground level there is a button which opens the doors, but only on the outside. If you're in the stairwell you have to hope someone outside presses the button.
