Hi there,

I'm Digs, I'm a postgraduate Engineering student and London based biker at Imperial College and The RCA. I'm designing a new motorcycle mechanical security device designed specifically to be highly resistant to angle grinder attack, it is designed to break away from the brute force, simplistic approach employed by 22mm chains where links each ways as much as a bag of sugar.

I was hoping some of you might be able to give me some info on what security you use for your bike/bikes?  - Survey Link

The reason I'm doing this project is simple, I have friends who do not ride anymore because they cannot afford to after bike theft, and friends who suffer from high levels of anxiety worried that their bike will be stolen and there is nothing they can do to stop it.

(Admin, I hope you do not consider this spam!)

Living in Scotland and with a 300kg bike, disk locks are good enough

Interesting, thank you.

Bu in London you will definitely have to anchor it down and have a chain around the wheels

Having a big fat heavy beast that I don't really wander far from I don't use any when out and about.  Though when its in the garage it does have a big fat chain and a car blocking the door 😃

At home the bike is in a locked garage. We live in a secluded spot in Cumbria and we have very nosey neighbours* at the end of our drive. Being farmers their dogs also act as alarms.

When touring I go with a disc lock and try to get secure parking wherever possible.

*Do not underestimate the value of nosey neighbours, especially farmers who are protective of their property.

The best defence is secrecy . My next line of defence is having a Biker as a nextdoor neighbor with a big dog . She's actually daft as a brush but she does a great impression of being aggressive . If all else fails you will have to get past Bob .

A) Touring: Always try and find secure parking - Disc Lock (Alarm type) and wire strop. Bikes also fitted with trackers.

B) Never ride in London.

Both bikes are kept in a locked garage covered by an alarm and CCTV. The bikes are chained together with a heavy duty chain and lock. Alarmed disclocks as well, with an additional separate alarm covering both bikes.

850,000 bees outside the garage.

Those Bees would keep me away too, but I love Honey.

Anything that is on the insurance list of approved products (found on any insurance comparison website). Usually anything that is Thatcham or Sold Secure.

I live in south Manchester. Scrotes everywhere. Just yesterday someone has their car broken into around the corner from us. I don't have a garage, but will be installing a ground anchor with Almax chain, alarmed disc locked, and beefed up locks on the gates.

And don't forget to cover it up. I'm not that far from South Madchester myself and we have a similar problem.

It's crap, isn't it? Yes, cover goes without saying. Just need to find one that will be good all year round.

disc lock when out on rides, when home my bike lives inside the other outside with disc lock and heavy chain and lock under cctv. But have a ground anchor to install at some point.
