  1. Having ridden a Yamaha YBR125 over one winter, if that bike had never been coated in ACF50, never been washed, never had rust spots treated and painted over with hammerite, after 2 winters it would have looked as bad as that. Most Japanese 125s are made in China. YBR's definitely are .
  2. Got them on the Harley . Wish I'd had them on the GSXR , they were a pain in the arse even with an adaptor .
  3. I've never had a problem with wheel bearings . Just stick a suitable drift ( Metal rod ) half way through the wheel and tank it from side to side to dislodge the spacer then get the edge just onto the bearing and give it one almighty blow with a big lump hammer . Then go to the opposite side and repeat. Keep checking that the bearing is coming out level and hit it accordingly . Once one is out the other one is easy . Just don't be afraid to really twat it one . The only thing I use a slide hammer for is getting the baffles out of the Harley and even then there is usually blood and tears .
  4. I thought it was a Triumph .
  5. I agree accept even going to the shops imagine the damage a tin of beans could do or glass jar if you went for a slide ... Says he who puts a back pack on to go to work, with plastic sandwich box in I believe that some motorcycle back packs incorporate a back protector . But you are right , it's a terrible risk to take . Says he who rode from Hinckley with a pair of handlebars complete with switches and levers sticking out of a rucksack .
  6. I've seen this done . Are you unpicking multi strand cable ? I found some brown florist's wire that's just the right gauge. Once the shape is right I've covered them in latex to hide the wires, then paint with Matt acrylic. And they are amazingly effective . In a few days the leaves will be off the trees . I was thinking , if you had some wire and the time , you could model an actual tree from life while sitting and looking at it .
  7. My plan is to dive into this ER5 engine on a voyage of discovery . I've got a feeling the head gasket has gone. I need to be sure because this thing is going to get me to the Outer Hebrides and back .
  8. I've seen this done . Are you unpicking multi strand cable ?
  9. So HE overtook YOU . So there must be some life left in it then . The tank is probably BSA but isn't that a Triumph emblem on the engine ?
  10. Happy birthday !
  11. I got mine from Sports Direct for a few quid and it's served me very well . No name but strong and waterproof with a mesh compartment in the lid for small items .
  12. Yep, had a new battery installed less than a month ago and checked the voltage last Thursday and it was totally fine (also rode it Thursday, Saturday, and Monday all fine, no trouble starting). Strip and clean the starter motor then .
  13. I wouldn't wear any kind of Back Pack except for going to the shops . I like my touring luggage strapped to the bike or in the form of panniers .
  14. giphy (6).gif You know what ? I strongly identify with Victor Meldrew and I'm proud to say it .
  15. I'm ok . Just sounding off a bit after another bleak day in the office .
  16. Braided line has arrived . I bought from a Northern Irish company called OHA for £22 and I'm very pleased with it . I like to put a few highlights in a contrasting colour on my bikes . My Gasket Set and Exhaust Studs are also here but I'm waiting for an 8 mm Stud Extractor before I go near them . Then it's pop the lid off and see what horrors lurk within . Oh , I've ordered some Camshafts for £15 as well because I don't like the look of what's in it. That's the great thing about ER5s , parts are abundant and cheap especially if you join a FB group . I'v even had a bit of free stuff .
  17. You mean not one for thick , lazy f*****s who didn't plan their lives at all and now have to continue to work when they lost the will to do so years ago and spend most of the day on the internet or gazing out of the window when they are not stealing someone else's biscuits or inventing imaginary barriers to actually getting anything done and can only get out on their bikes at the weekend so long as it's not freezing cold or pissing down ................Like me .
  18. Double post .
  19. So if you're bike had been nicked and you had just given a description of the bike and possibly the theif to the Police , wouldn't you expect the Police to make some effort to recover it that might include having a good look at any bikes being ridden in the area ? Whatever they were doing , they probably had a good reason to be doing it . Best to let it go .
  20. I used to fly my electrics on a field at the bottom of our road. There was a footpath some distance away which I avoided but sometimes people would wander over and watch. If they got too close or just began to annoy me I just did a low pass at full throttle and they decided they'd seen enough. I must confess I do enjoy the more gentle kind of models more, they are more of an aeroplane and less of a guided missile. I enjoy the gentle kind of models too . Most of mine are scaled up Keil Kraft rubber powered designs built from plans with micro RC and outrunner motors . Not something that could be done when I first started building 50 years ago .
  21. If you check out Bar End Mirrors on eBay you will see that the majority of them are described as universal which usually means that they come with a choice of inserts . So there you go , choose whatever style you like . Personally I think they look crap so repairing your thread with a Thread Chaser or a Helicoil Kit might be worth considering . By the way , it wouldn't happen to be a left hand thread would it ?

    Top Tip .

Can you do the taps and dies to match? Cannot claim full set but I have some.. I have inherited from several generations of hoarders. Sadly I had no space for lathe that could of produced any size... AF and Metric Taps & Dies. Full set of stud extractors, clutch compressor, two sizes of gear puller, strap wrench and a chain wrench, etc, etc. Hardest part of any job is remembering where the correct tool is stored! That does sound like a typical Harley Davidson tool collection . I've already had to replace the " Grenade Plate " in my clutch as a precaution so I've acquired a clutch tool . One thing I have done is replace as many Torx Bolts as possible , can't stand the things . Stud extractor I've just bought for the project ER5 but my Harley exhaust studs are in remarkably good health .
  23. First thing to try is to remove and clean both ends of both battery leads with sandpaper and refit them . To be honest though , that actually sounds like a simple case of flat battery . As Dynax has said , you could split the starter motor and rather than spend any money they usually just need a very good clean . Here's one I did the other week . The copper bit is what usually needs attention but use only the finest Wet and Dry paper ( 2500 grit ) If the problem persists even with a new battery then it could be the charging system . This is where things get a bit more mechanical but I'm happy to guide you through the process of fitting a new Alternator coil .
  24. I'm not entirely against electric power . All of my RC planes are electric now . I hasten to add that mine are all at the other end of the scale to this thing .

    New member.

The reason I ask is that the GPX FB Group is asking who bought a particular bike off eBay as a winter project . I thought perhaps it might have been our new member .
