Hi guys and girls,

How are you?

Hope you are having a fantastic new year :)

Tomorrow, I'll got to the office for the first time after 2 months, and I really would love to go by bike.

It is a 35 mile trip, from Croydon to Horsham.

Well, the reason tell me not to , temperature tomorrow will be no more than 3 degrees, so , there is a high risk of ice.

I was thinking to stick to bus roads, but still, there could be patches of ice.

Reason says to use the car, my hart says to use the bike, what you would do? I have a small cruiser, so my tyres are not really for slippery sirfaces.

I know, sorry for the rant, I should get the car.... :(

There was a time I lived in a village with poor public transport, and I didn’t own a car, so riding the bike was the only option to get to work on those days where the train times didn’t provide a practical alternative. I rode in all weathers as a matter of necessity. It was an utterly barking situation. I reality I should have flogged the bike and bought a little car.

I go by bike when I go in, I did earlier this week and if I were going in tomorrow would go on my bike. I travel on the urban/city A roads and motorways to work and it works for me.

If there are patches of ice then stay off the bike. Not worth it. But if the roads are well used and gritted then it's a question of whether you have the right gear for cold weather. It is silly to ride in cold weather if you don't have the right kit, when you are cold you lose concentration and dexterity. Both are needed on a bike.

I won’t take my bikes out if the roads have been gritted, you can hear it eating away at it nasty, plus I don’t like the cold and I don’t have to use them so they stay laid up and sorn.

If you are riding through town traffic and filtering is your thing you're likely to make better progress but I doubt there'd be much fun in it. For all the reasons above take a car if you can.

I used to ride in all weathers, literally, and an unplanned ride in heavy snow is still recounted in my family. Nowadays, I admit I'm a fair-ish weather rider. One thing I'd say is that the bike was always better than expected in everything other than ice and snow.

Have a bit of Nottignham Roadcraft in the snow :thumb:

Hi guys, thanks to all of you :) and thanks for the videos.

So I used the car this morning, many ice patches on the rural roads around me and temperature was -1. So I'm glad I didn't risk it.

Thanks again

For what it`s worth I got out of Croydon over 30 years ago and never regretted it.

I am sure it is where they will stick the tube when they give the planet an enema!

Cheers

Oooh, on a planetary level there's much, much worse than Croydon. :classic_unsure:

Tis a matter of opinion and partly based on what the river Wandle smelt like back in the 80`s lol.

Cheers

There a story, no doubt apocryphal, of an admiral who was hosting a huge banquet on board a naval vessel visiting Liverpool. Unfortunately the weather turned nasty so the posh bash was cancelled and the ship towed out by tugs to anchor off the bar.

As he stood in the pouring rain watching guests disembark onto a filthy quay the admiral turned to the pilot and said,

"Pilot, this proves it, Liverpool is the ar*ehole of the world."

To which the pilot calmly replied,

"Well never mind Sir, you're only passing through it."

Hmm, Port au Prince, Haiti before the earthquake was pretty poor, wouldn't like to guess now. Pointe Noire Congo with the dead bodies wafting up and down on the tide was quite a low light as well. Paradip, Karachi,  Caracas now, and any number of other hell holes cross my mind.
