Here at Whiteside’s Aero Works another control line Goodyear racer fuselage takes form .... this is the work bench .... known as the dining room table until just an hour ago when Julie, and her friend Lesley, set off on their 7 night cruise around the Canaries....

This is my sad looking control line plane, spare engine and can of 40 year old fuel, (still smells potent)

First built it in the late 70s, revived it in 1993 when one of its many crashes took the wings off, I then rebuilt them from scratch and flew again. Since then it's just kicked around in the garage.

I was given one with a Jetex engine with some fuel by a neighbour - it was immediately confiscated by my parents as I was only 6 yo and they called it a flying bomb - might still be in my Mum’s loft.

I once spent weeks building a balsa wood glider from a plan ( not a kit ) & found out I loved the smell of ‘Dope’, launched it untethered off the top of Beacon Hill South B’ham, it flew beautifully into the distance never to be seen again , I was only 10 and gave up that hobby in disgust.

Yes i went through the glider building phase too, 1metre wingspan Keilkraft model. There used to be a model shop in Rugby called Moore's, upstairs was like a treasure trove to a 10 year old, sadly it closed some years ago. We used to fly the gliders on a field near Preston Capes, large open field about a mile long and slight gradient.

I know the pain of losing a model, I spent weeks building a Focke-wulf 190 and smashed it to bits on its maiden flight.

There are two schools of thought on whether you put your name and address in a model.

 

Some do in hope that if it flies away they might get it back 

 

Others don't, on the basis that when the accident investigation pulls it out of the engine intake of a 747 you don't want them knocking at your door with the bill .

A shame really because disappearing into the distance is the ultimate accolade to your building skills .

This one was a challenge . A hundred hand cut paper shapes Bluetacked on and then misted with a rattle can . More imagination than accuracy but the Germans were making up colour schemes as they went along when the paint started to run out . He 177 , nickname : The Flaming Coffin .

Just seen this thread.  That there ole engine in the raggity plane is a Davis Charlton (DC Quickstart) Sabre Diesel of 1.5cc.  I believe.

 

Had one when I was about 10.  Hard to find with the spring and starting cam intact.

 

The other may be a DC spitfire of 1cc of the same era (early 70s).

@Tinkicker yes that sounds about right, me an my older brother had the 1.5cc motors, my little brother had the 1cc.

I was the only one who really stuck at it, had three planes, IIRC, the first was just some generic thing that my uncle smashed up when he had a go, a Focke Wolf 190 that I destroyed on its maiden flight and this one which has had various rebuilds, still on the original fuselage.

Great fun times.

I’ve taken up playing pool again after a 15 year lay off. Before that I played l local league pool for 20 years. 
 

I joined a team 3 games into the winter season last year and I’m playing better than I ever did. 
Loving it!

Ha haar that made me smile.. l used to play pool 20 years ago in the local Lincoln league. A great night out and a few shiny plastic trophies. 

Over Christmas when my youngest came back from uni he said he'd taken up the game. Brilliant says l let's go down the club and have a game.

Absolutely useless can't see a thing! My specs throw everything off straight and without them it's a bit of a blur...
