So, I have been contemplating the future of the internal combustion engine & electric powered vehicles and have a question nagging away in the back of my mind:

When people have moved from I.C.E’s how will the Government fill the holes in their coffers created by the lack of revenue from petrol / diesel?

I haven’t found an answer, so have created some of my own:

A/ They will tax electricity ( from 5% to say 25% and not being able to differentiate between domestic consumption and that being used to power vehicles everyone will be hit weather they use a vehicle or not

B/ The VLD will be increased - thus hitting everyone with an electric vehicle regardless of how much electric they consume.

C/ There will be charge for every mile completed - this would mean the Government having access to this information directly from your vehicle & be able to charge you directly having access to your bank account.

D/ Sell pre paid cards that are inserted into a vehicle before it can operate, they can thus remove this privilege by cancelling the card if you digress in any way.

None of the above options appeals to me in anyway, so unless anyone can come up with any other suggestions I will not be using or promoting the use of electric vehicle

I can see there being a flat rate Road tax complimented by tax per mile, they will work out how to rake it in, they can't afford not too.

There will be no simple solution. When they set road tax for small engined cars at tiny amounts they lost so much money that all new cars have higher tax to pay. It also meant that manufacturers designed engines to comply with the tax rules rather than to be mechanically reliable or efficient. End result is a generation of complex diesels that cost a fortune to run once they’ve done anything over 60k. Not to mention the VW emissions fiasco.

And sooner or later they realise that electric cars pollute just as much but the environmental costs are just hidden in the manufacturing, disposal and electricity generation.
