techniques Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 After a month of trawling through Ebay and Facebook Market place, I come across a 2005 SV650s on gumtree for £1500 with 30kmiles, 1 previous owner, full service history.I honestly thought my search would lead deep into winter, but nope, found her Tuesday, saw her Wednesday & picked her up Thursday.I'm SE London and she was in Wembley (NW). It rained all the way from me going to pick her up, to riding her home. My current Phone holder didn't fit so I had to rely on road signs (a strange notion for a millennial ) . I also didn't realise the S version is the leaned riding position until I was riding her away, so that took 20 minutes to get used to. My tight-ish textile trousers gave way in the middle when I climbed on and hugged the tank with my legs. I'm no expert, so I will just change the oil for today, and book her in for a full service sometime soon. Really happy with the purchase. I was Initially going to go for an MT-07, as that's what I learned on, but that's out of my budget at the moment.Anyway, off I go to change the oil and off for a ride. The roads are still wet, but compared to yesterday's journey, today might as well be summer. 1 Quote
Stu Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Cracking bulletproof bikes enjoy PS they all have the same riding position regardless if they are an S or not Quote
husoi Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Nice looking ride Enjoy your trips. MAke sure you allow for a few miles tyre warm up before you start going faster Quote
fastbob Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Excellent bike and a great price . It were mine , the first thing I would buy would be a Fender Extender and the bigger the better . There's a lot of vulnerable stuff right where the salt and filth gets flung . Quote
fullscreenaging Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Congrats on your new bike. You said you are no expert so just wondered......You did change the oil filter at the same time you did the oil right? If not then you wasted your money on the oil you just put in. You also need a use new crush washer every time you you take the oil drain bolt out. Quote

We don't know how old the filter is for a start it could be a few thousand miles oldThe filter is supposed to be replaced at 600, then 11,000 miles or every 36 months with an oil change at 600, 4000, 7500, 11,000 and 14,500 Quote

Mississippi Bullfrog Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Looks like a good bike for the money. Personally I prefer the build quality from that time to what is available now. But I've noticed that prices of that age of bike are holding up well, in fact they've increased over the past couple of years, so that's a really good deal. Bikes that were selling for £1500 two years ago are nearer £2000 these days. Probably helped by the time of year I suppose.Technically you don't have to change the oil filter every oil change but I always do. And unless you know when that one was last done it makes sense to do it now anyway. Quote

I’m sure you would have done it too @Stu if it was your bike I think you're missing the point The oil change was not a waste because he hasn't replaced the filter! the oil quality doesn't depend on a filter change being done and the filter doesn't degrade the oil if it being serviced to schedule then the oil filter will be OK! Yes I would have changed it but thats just me for my peace of mind Quote

techniques Posted October 30, 2020 Author Posted October 30, 2020 Day 1 report.Took it to the motorway for the first time. (Well, 2nd if you count the M23 stint on our way back from passing mod1+2.)A lot more comfortable than the naked MT-07 at NSL! The wind was unbearable on the MT. I actually took my M25 route to work as a test. It was awesome. Definitely sneaking in a few journeys before it gets too cold. Also, at one point, I pulled over to the side of the road to check google maps I was going the right direction and a boy, no older than 10, cycled towards me and said "I just wanted to say, I think that your bike is really cool." James in Brum Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Lovely to read enthusiasm for the game I adore playing on my bike which is an older steed. I have similar experience of disliking naked bikes at NSL and if I had ever sped at the upper limited of my bikes capabilities I am sure I would have been grateful for the fairing then too Quote
Jerry1111 Posted October 30, 2020 Posted October 30, 2020 Definitely sneaking in a few journeys before it gets too cold. Just get proper clothing and enjoy all year round, it doesn't get *too* cold in here - can't see any snow anywhere! Quote
