Boat insurance is a bit different from bike insurance.

Yesterday afternoon I rang my insurers to say I'd sold one boat and bought another. The premium on the one I sold was £42 for the year and it didn't have long to run so I'd assumed it would just expire.

This morning's post brought a cheque for £9.30 as a pro-rata refund, and the policy documents for the new boat.

My boat cost around £500 to insure but that was all waters from Finisterre to the Baltic and was afloat year round cover with a £1000 excess. It was a reasonable quote for what I did.

I can't see me sailing a Laser or Mirror quite as far as the Baltic. Round our local lake is usually enough for me.

There was a bloke who sailed from the UK round the Med in a Mirror, but I don't think I'll try it.

Isn’t that the same for bike policies? I changed my bike about six weeks ago and changed insurance companies at the same time. I got a pro-rata refund for over 10 months on the old bike’s policy.

Not always - a lot of bike companies will charge you a fee for changing details. Often the fee is quite substantial.

Just been speaking to an old friend who works in a supermarket. They just had a delivery of Easter Eggs. Which is something I find both amusing and horrifying at the same time. Nothing like prioritising lorry space in the run up to Christmas, is there.

Best 'My boat's bigger than your boat' post of the year.

I am humbled by the diminutive size of my vessels.

But at least I have two of them. That's virtually a whole fleet compared to having just one boat. Which makes me a Commodore and outranks a mere Captain.

I sold mine a few years ago as couldn't justify the ridiculous amount of money needed to keep it and with increasing numbers of grandchildren weren't getting the use of it either.

Bought a motorbike instead.

I did get the urge to buy a boat a few years ago. My good lady bought us lessons, and we passed RYA level 2 at Filby Broad. I thought I’d buy a nice little Wayfarer. My good lady prefers a vessel where ducking under the boom every time you turn (her dad had a 27’ sailing boat when she was young so she was spoiled, I said). I got all keen and qualified Competent Crew around the rivers Roach and Crouch. Started saving for a suitable boat. It all got lost when I spent the money on upgrading the bike. Oops.

We bought a partly completed 35 footer and we worked on it full time for almost 3 years. (7 - 7, 5 days a week) and when I was away my wife worked on it for at least  3 days a week. Just about killed us and I'll never, ever do anything like it again. That said enjoyed the boat for 5 years and covered the entire West Coast from the Scillies to Ullapool and all round Ireland. Now, covid permitting we rent one for a week or two which costs way less.

Talking insurance:

does my policy on my stolen bike continue and do I just change to the new bike when I get it?

I have very limited experience of claims but from what I remember if you've claimed for the stolen bike then they'll start a new policy when you get the replacement. Companies may vary of course, but that's what I remember from way back.

That sounds about right (as I recall from my days as an insurance agent several decades ago).

Good morning, haven't been on here for a couple of weeks as I've had a busy schedule. Was in Istanbul with WiFi that was so slow it was probably MB per hour rather than second.

Watched through the entire Long Way Round, Down, and Up series. Depressed myself when I realised I'm now the age they were when they did their first trip

It's communications, can you say, yes yes I see and shout when required?

I could probably class communications manager as part of my current job.

Well I frequently tell people to shut up and get on with their work at least

Hmm, I see.

Although "yes, yes, etc" and shouting are withing my skill set, I recently up-skilled to "f*ck off I'm not interested" with an advanced module of "why are you bothering me with this shit?"

I believe this makes me the standout candidate for all and any high ranking position while attracting at least double the normal salary.

So you're 2 levels below mine, "Do I give a shit to your problems?" 🤣

There are no fixed salary, this is open to experience. But hey. I'm working there so you don't need much (experience) 😋

@Mr Fro regarding workload, if you work hard then you will be the only one. :thumb:
