If your mate who had just passed his bike test told you he was going to buy an R1 or a GSXR1000, what would you say to him?

Can I have a go?

I’ve already answered this question and I’m not about to change my answer just because you phrase it slightly differently from your first post. Are you paying attention? Is replying to your questions just a waste of time?

all these hypotheticals. The question should be what bike you are considering after you pass your test, rather than some imaginary figure who may or may not exist in the real world.

Unless someone wants to correct me, someone passing his bike test and getting a litre bike with very little experience is like someone passing his car test and getting a Nissan Skyline.

My son was 16 and had just got his restricted licence when he bought a Mitsubishi Galant 2.5L V6 twin turbo!...

Buy what you want and can afford!

is barking mad. Don't you think so?

There's nothing stopping someone who has passed his/her bike test from buying such a big and powerful bike, but some of the litre bikes are known as 'widow makers' for a reason!

Starting to see who’s barking mad here, actually no that’s not fair. You are doing the best job I have seen in a longtime of trolling this forum.

it seems simple to me the answer to your question, most agree a fast high capacity bike as first bike is a bad idea.  However if people choose to do it well why not?

There is no enough stuff being banded and restricted in the world without adding more.

Respect and Tolerance words that are missing from many peoples vocabulary at the moment.  I can agree with some of what your saying however I can respect and tolerate that others have different views.

Can you not do the same…

Do you think all bikes ride the same way? There's a big difference between a Harley and an R1.

I couldnt give a toss what someone else wants to ride its up to them. Thanks for pointing out there is a big difference I just thought it was just the colour and harley riders had a love for tractors except Bob that is.

I’ve seen some bloody fast Harley riders.
To the point where I’ve thought, how the hell can they ride like that.
Sparks coming off the foot pegs!!

Now this really makes me piss!!

There is no modern day sports bike classed as a "widow maker"  that term was used for the early TL1000s before it was recalled and a re tuned ECU fitted and a steering damper

The issue with that bike was not all about power!

I know I owned one for 9 years!

was it fast....yes

was it scary......not really!

Is there faster 600cc bikes! yes there is!

So before referencing to "widow makers" learn about the bike and the power and why it was called a widow maker

Other bikes was called this to make them sound scary thats all

In theory that’s true, but logically it’s just absolutely stupid.

Do you think a 17-year-old lad get a Ferrari that can do 170mph as his first car?

Do you not care about people’s safety?

I don’t think that I should be described as “trolling” this forum for pointing out how absurd it is to recommend a newbie who has just passed his bike test to go out and get one of the fastest bikes ever made and expect him to be fine. I care about people’s safety and I think it’s actually quite frightening for people to just say “get what you want”, “you’ll be fine!”, “it’s only down to the rider”, etc.

Newbies make mistakes. A powerful bike can be intimidating for even people who have been riding bikes for years and years. Superbikes are truly beasts.

Newbies are often cocky and get overconfident and that’s when an accident happens. Some bikes need someone who has years of experience for there to be no problems.

Years ago people could ride a 250cc on L plates and that was changed because so many people were having accidents and there were fatalities. Yet on here people think it’s fine for a newbie to get a 1000cc superbike and expect that person to be fine? Yeah, okay then.

There’s a reason why superbikes are expensive to get insured for newbie riders. There’s a reason why very few people start out on a superbike.

There are some bikes that are “scary”. They’re literally missiles. There’s no messing about with some bikes and they can reach ridiculous speeds in a very short time.

I’m not sure why you’re trying to downplay the speed of bikes like the R1, the ZX10-R, the CBR1000RR, GSXR1000, etc.

If you had a son who wanted to get a CBR1000RR as his first bike after passing his test, would you not have a word with him?

No its not, logically and legally you have proven you are entitled to ride any bike.

I had fast cars straight from passing my driving test, cost a fortune to insure and buy but I could so I did 😁

Have you ridden them?

I have

Mate gave me keys to his home brew supercharged hyabusa not long after passing my test, I didn't explode and the bike only went as fast as I made it 🤔

For someone who hasn't passed their test and I presume never ridden one you seem to know an awful lot about them!

You can easily trash yourself on a pushbike never mind a Motorbike. As already mentioned the throttle works both ways. Size doesn't matter, respect and common sense really do's

Feck I forgot about going head over arse on my 3 wheel shopper when I was 6, I could point to the exact spot it started to go wrong and the tree I went through and the brambles I ended up in with the bike on top of me, god kids shouldn't be allowed on a veloccipede it's down right child abuse, I was only sent for milk.

Don't know where you live, but down here there's plenty of rich kids spending daddy's money on fast cars, in fact there's even one kid learning to drive in a Audi R8!!! In fact you wonder how some of them can get insured?

And on your question I went from a BSA Bantam to a Suzuki T200, then to the mighty Kawasaki H1 500 triple, a bike that would tank slap as soon as you opened the bloody throttle, fun but scary!!

and a few crashes to laugh about later in life, most modern bikes are bloody easy to ride. 😂

Not sure why you asked the question in the first place, Geoff. Did you get bored of fighting with your shadow or something?

Do you also consult Reddit before wiping your arse or rubbing one out? (I’m just kidding).

I think we all respect that you think 999cc and above should be beyond the reach of newly licenced riders, but not everyone agrees. Newly licenced riders come in all shapes, sizes, ages and all with varying degrees of common sense (or lack of).

It’s a far more nuanced discussion than you realise; there’s no one rule that applies to new riders.

There is one “rule:

New riders are inexperienced and cause the most accidents.

That’s why it’s very expensive for them to get powerful bikes straightaway. Their inexperience makes them more vulnerable than people who have years and years of experience.

Why do you think faster bikes and cars are more expensive to insurance when you are young with no experience?
