What did you do WITH your bike today.

A run out to Squires Cafe after taking the grandson back to his mummy, via the football cage at Bill Chafer VC park …

There was a cycling event on at Squires which led to long queues for a drink so I set off to Selby, Snaith, Thorne and home … 78 miles of peace ….

2 attempts to kill me, A1 roadworks and M18 congestion ….

As a lifelong cyclist it was nice to see the 2 different variations at the same place …

My first day out on the bike since returning from our tour in September so I joined in with the local RoSPA group ride. The weather was a bit “fresh” and some of the road surfaces were … interesting.

We stopped, briefly, at Route 59 cafe, near Skipton, but there was a long, slow moving queue for refreshments so we continued to Goat Gap cafe for a cuppa before wending a route home.

Interesting to spot the Norton at Route 59… in lovely nick. Probably quite rare now.

After a glorious weekend without my bike today the weather is grey and I have to ride to Birmingham for a medical. Quick blast up the M5 but plan something more pleasant for the way home. Now queuing.

Isn't the front tyre of the Norton on back-to-front, wrong rotation direction?

The tread is going to funnel water into the middle instead of away from it?

No its correct.
The design is to push water away from the centre tyre toward the outer side and flick the water away and outward from the contact patch (touching the tmac) especially when on the side of the tyre as its rolling forward.
also if the tread was the other way the braking forces would close up the tread when you really need them to stay open and push the water away.

fronts and rears have different jobs and so they're designed as so.

id be more concerned about the pressure and fork rebound, the picture isnt the best but suggest it would be  better to sort it out to get the best from it.

So got the medical out of the way and as usual got lost in Birmingham. Benighted city. Ended up in Kidderminster then had a reasonable tootle but dark skies rather dampened my enthusiasm so came home earlier than I expected.

I get lost in Brum and I spent the first 38 years of my life living in and around the city. Mind, a lot has changed in the intervening 30+ years.

I’m on a ride out to Derby Airfield tomorrow …. Delivering some diesel fuel to a contact there … says no rain … but I’ll be dressed for all possibilities

How do you come up with that synopsis from that photo

My usual thrash over the Aintree in pouring rain. Why I bothered to wash the bike I have no idea.

I had an interesting conversation with gentleman from the council who had closed a rural road by putting a road closed sign halfway along it. It is single lane road with no turning space. The suggestion that he might consider placing a sign at the entrance to the lane to prevent traffic entering it did not seem to go down well. It wasn't on his map so he wasn't going to do it.

Since he had left a gap between his road cones I slipped through and found his colleague at the other end who had sensibly closed the road at the junction.

Needless to say no work of any kind was taking place along the entirety of the closed section.

As i said its not entirely the best pic but seems so.

Front tyre light and dark patches especially on the far side show it, part of the upper tread points down so where the tyre should be light from the road dust but it is dark so the tyre is puckering in or moving too much pounding that part of the tyre wearing it out faster...
now depending on how many miles that tyre has done or if its had a proper fork service since.

Alternatively it could just be the car park is dusty? Can't say I see any suspension issues and generally folks who have vintage bikes in that good condition have them in an overall well fettled state.

Your Missing the point to the answer which I answered clearly for some reason.

the dust is blatantly showing the wear issue which is giving the clue like brass rubbing.

Which again i said to get the best from it...

now westy thats sounding like an assumption, like would you trust all mechanics? To know everything?

No but someone who has a vintage collector's item usually does an awful lot of fettling themselves or uses a specialist mechanic with a good reputation not some cowboy chancer.

More to the point - did you not notice the rather splendid Triumph Bobber parked behind the Norton?

I tried to hide it with the Norton.

There was a rather nice Guzzi V100 there (no photo). I rather like the look of them but I don’t know where I’d get it serviced should I buy one.

Bit of a wasteland for Guzzis in the NW. Nearest is Tyneside or Yorkshire which aren't exactly on your doorstep.  I'm lucky it's about 7 miles away and a lot closer than Ducati was.

I was lucky in Norfolk. There’s a guy in Acle who I’d trust with all and any bikes regardless (except Chinese - he won’t go near them). There’s a distinct lack of independents within easy ride around here so I’m stuck with main dealers. It was almost tempting to get him to service the bike while I was in Norfolk on my way to Harwich last year.

That's beautiful.

Now, you're mot kidding us with one photo, I bet you've taken loads....

I only took three to be fair, just to send to my Dad.

I'll tax it on Thursday when we kick into February, then if the roads are dry at the weekend, take it for a little scoot about to get to know him.

I've got to keep in mind that I'm still very much a new, novice rider with only 800 miles experience under my belt on a 650cc, so this is a totally different world that I want to approach with caution.

I was pleasantly surprised with how nice it sounds though for a bone stock, Euro 5 exhaust - plenty loud enough for my middled-aged, mild-mannered, clerical gentleman status - "walk softly and carry a big stick".
