CC ADVICE!?

Hello guys, this may come across as a stupid question but I need bring back to reality lol.

 

So I’m getting my A licence in the new year, been riding on an A2 license for a little over a year now, I was thinking about getting a 1000cc bike next, but a voice in my head tells me that’s not very smart and I should go for a 600cc!

 

I was thinking of either an R1 or ZX10R, should I be looking more at an R6 or ZX6R instead? I won’t be doing track days, I’ll only riding at weekends for a bit of fun.

 

Also if you have any other suggestions of bikes that would be good for me I’d appreciate any opinions. My budget is £4500, £5000 at a push and preferably a sports bike too.

 

Cheers guys, again probably a stupid question but I’m young and too confident for my own good.

A former work colleague bought a Fireblade straight after passing his test. A steady, sensible, down to earth guy used the logic that it was up the rider to determine how far to twist the throttle. He changed the bike for a tourer not much later. Just saying… 😂

My latest bike has about one third of the power of my previous bike, about 45 BHP instead of about 130. I had the previous bike for 9 years and loved it. The truth is, however, that the new one is a lot more fun to ride on the road. I can now use a lot of the performance a lot of the time instead of a bit of the performance some of the time. For most of the rides I do my journey times from A-B are very much the same in both bikes. My licence is probably a lot more secure on the new one.

As you say you are young snd want to scratch an itch, nothing wrong with that but don’t be afraid to downsize at some point to find the bike that suits your needs best.

If your unable to exercise self control a 125 can be dangerous.

I thought you had to ride for 2 years on an A2 to qualify for the auto upgrade to full A license.  I'd say look at an MT07. Plenty of fun, light, flickered and plenty of them around in that price range

Couldn't have put it better myself . I went from the World's most powerful production motorcycle ( In 1993 ) to a lazy Harley Sportster . I wish I'd done it years ago . The Sports Bike is dead . If you want to go really fast on a bike that handles then an MT09 or Speed Triple style bike would be worth considering .

Either a 600 or a 1000 bike will be equally fun or deadly depending how you ride it. But engine capacity isn't the whole story. I ride a 1200 and a 500, it's how the power is delivered, how heavy the bike is, it's architecture and how it handles. For long trips that involve motorways I use the 500.

 

A 600 can be just as fast as a 1000 but lighter and more nimble.

 

I'd forget about engine size and just try bikes to see what suits you. 

 

If you're after a sports bike make sure you get an extended test ride. They can get uncomfortable very quickly if you choose one after a quick spin round the block.

I thought I miss read it. Your Insurance might bring the reality back. Do you have any quotes for the bikes you would like.

As a 20 year old I bought a 2 year old Pegeot 306 1.9 turbo 115hp with factory spoilers, suspension upgrade, low profiles etc

 

All because the insurance and loan payments where cheaper than the monthly insurance on a small engined 12 year old Astra, Escort, Golf etc that I could afford to pay for cash. 

 

Since then I have always had an eye on insurance cost before purchase.

Really how bizarre! I got a tracer 700 recently too, how are you finding yours?

 

OP Unless you're getting a modern 1000cc bike I reckon a 600 is more suited to riding on the roads, more involving to ride too - you can't just go everywhere in 3rd gear for example.

 

I reckon get what you want but as others have said check insurance and if at all possible get some test rides first (although this is much harder than it should be sadly).

Hello!

 

I was in your exact position a couple of months ago. After riding an SV650s for a little over a year, I was ready to make the jump to a sports bike and trying to decide between GSXR 600cc or just going for the big boy 1000cc.

 

Even though the seller was pushing for the 1000c, I listened to MY voice and went with the 600cc. I can tell you the only reason you're considering a 1000cc is because you don't think the power of a 600cc will be enough.

The power of a Japanese 600cc super sport will knock your socks off coming from an A2 bike. It is insane.  The terms "crotch rocket" and "death machine" suddenly take on literal meanings. 

 

Also, you can actually cane a 600cc. Pass 12k revs, feel yourself being pulled back into the seat. The screech. Love it.

Try to cane a 1000cc and you will lose your licence or dead. The "You can kill yourself on a 125cc" argument is BS. A 1000cc sports bike has 70%~ more power than the 600cc. It's 0-100mph in 3secs. It is A LOT easier to kill yourself on a 1000cc.

 

 

 

That said, a 2012 Repsol fireblade is in my future.

Brief history of my bikes,

Fazer 600,

TDM900,

Triumph Trophy 1200,

 

The Fazer 600 - was most likely to get me killed, some one commented on a ride a lead.  I had the slowest bike on paper but no one could keep up, like twisty roads. I only sold because a naked bike for all weather riding is friggin cold and wet.
Trophy 1200 - on paper near enough the same speed as Fazer. It might be but it is not as light and nimble and harder to throw around like the Fazer. However more likely to loose my licence you just don’t realise the speed your carrying. Plus it’s noticeable heavier.
Tdm 900 - Very sensible bike, light great to throw around, fast enough. Although slower than the other 2. Plus is does 70mpg. It should be my only bike on paper.
 

However my misses and daughter love growing pillion on it and it’s so much fun to ride even if somewhat fuel hungry somewhere between 25 and 40mpg I  suspect. Depending on my right hand.

 

Bikers change bikes like women change shoes…. There is always another better bike round the corner.

Look at what you want to do with a bike, then find the bike that ticks the box’s…

Funnily enough in retrospect neither bike was as bad in reality as the hype made them out to be.

The H2 was a handful especially when slightly cold and wheelies when not thoroughly warmed up could turn very wrong very quickly, that aside it wasn`t that exceptionally bad given nothing handled that well at the time.

The TL had a terrible rep but when you spoke to actual owners rather than testers most people loved them and just changed the rear damper if they were able to.

Had a great trackday on one once at Brands and would have loved to own one.
